The Eight Pillars of Community Need
Colony Park, Lakeside Hills, and LBJ neighborhood residents have advocated for increased investments, services, and amenities in their neighborhoods since the 1970s. The project is led by a group of community leaders known as the Colony Park Core Team. The Core Team crafted a community-focused vision for this area and the 208-acre development. To unify their vision, they created the Eight Pillars to guide their work.

Community Advocacy Lays the Foundation for Future Development
Since the 1970s, residents of Colony Park, Lakeside Hills, and the LBJ neighborhoods have advocated for increased investments, services, and amenities in their communities. These early efforts established a legacy of civic engagement and set the stage for the creation of the Colony Park Sustainable Community decades later.
2012
Early Planning and Federal Investment Begins
In 2012, early planning for the Colony Park Sustainable Community began with a $3 million HUD Challenge Grant, the formation of a Technical Advisory Group with subject matter experts from across the City of Austin, initial land and site constraints analyses by the Watershed Protection Department, and engagement from federal, City, and neighborhood leaders, laying the foundation for future development.
2014
Master Plan Establishes the Vision
In 2014, the City of Austin adopted the Colony Park Master Plan, outlining a long-term vision for a mixed-income, sustainable community with homes, retail, parks, mobility options, and public services designed to support long-term growth.
2018
Partnership With Catellus Begins
In 2018, the City entered an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement with Catellus, selecting a master developer with a proven track record to help bring the Colony Park vision to life through planning, infrastructure strategy, and community-focused development.
2020
Colony Park Project Marks Austin’s Largest Redevelopment Since Mueller
In 2020, the City joined forces with Catellus to launch Colony Park, a mixed-use community featuring housing, retail, office space, a transit hub, and an innovation district. It marks Austin’s most ambitious redevelopment since the Mueller community was built.
2023
Zoning Framework Moves Development Forward
In 2023, updates to the Planned Unit Development zoning were approved, aligning land use, density, and community priorities to prepare the site for future infrastructure and development activity.
2024
In 2024, the City of Austin and Catellus advanced the Colony Park Sustainable Community with the signing of the Development Agreement, new financing tools, and key Council approvals that clear the way for infrastructure, public amenities, and future development across the 208-acre site.
